Many people are falling victim to fraudulent subscriptions or “Scamscriptions” that they have unwittingly signed up to via fake emails or through tempting “Free Trial” offers of products or software, which are also often falsely endorsed by celebrities without their knowledge.

These subscriptions will seem to be too good to be true with offers of free trials/samples, but these can stop abruptly, but the subscription rolls on and then becomes very difficult to cancel in many cases.

So beware of the following:

Hidden Contract Terms in the small print, so always read these very carefully before committing with a Card payment
Billing descriptions on your bank statements may carry unclear or misleading business names, so may go by unnoticed
You may think you have a free trial period, but a charge is imposed from the start which is difficult to reconcile or dispute with the company which may also be fictitious or uncontactable
Scammers rely on you forgetting to cancel your payments, not noticing small monthly payments from an account or just simply not checking the bank statements at all.
So always;

Check the small print
Look out for negative reviews
Mark your diary with the end of the so called “free period” and cancel if appropriate especially with “free” software offers
Report any suspicious charges to your Card provider as soon as possible to give you a better chance of being able to cancel and recoup any charges

Please feel free to share these messages with any vulnerable friends, relatives or neighbours

Health professionals urge: ‘Plan ahead for Easter Bank Holiday’

As the Easter Bank Holiday approaches, health professionals within local community pharmacies and at NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin are urging people across the county to plan ahead for their medication needs to ensure they have essential prescriptions in time.

With General Practices closed on Good Friday (18 April 2025) and Easter Monday (21 April 2025), it is crucial for patients who rely on repeat prescriptions to order them well in advance and to make sure they have enough to see them through the Easter period.

Running out of vital medication can cause unnecessary health risks and pressure on urgent care services, so patients should be requesting their medication as soon as possible either through their GP practice, the NHS App, or through the Prescription Ordering Direct (POD) service. You can contact POD by completing this online form, emailing shropshire.pod@nhs.net or calling 03333 583 509.

Although some pharmacies will be closed over the Bank Holiday period, some will remain open to provide expert advice, over-the-counter treatments, and emergency medication where appropriate. To find pharmacy opening times over the Easter Bank Holiday, please visit: https://bit.ly/42otWLE.

Sab Rooprai, Owner and Pharmacist at Conway Pharmacy in Shrewsbury, said: “Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals who can assist with a range of minor ailments, including cold and flu symptoms, stomach upsets, sore throat and earache, as well as rashes and skin conditions.

“Over the Easter Bank Holiday, some pharmacies will remain open, ensuring that people can still access essential healthcare support, consultations and, in some cases, prescribed treatments for many common conditions. If you need advice or treatment over the Bank Holiday, check your local pharmacy’s opening times and pop in to see how we can help.”

For life-threatening emergencies, such as signs of a stroke or heart attack, always call 999 immediately. For non-emergencies, you can contact NHS 111 online or call 111 free from landlines and mobiles

We have some top tips to help keep you and your home safe this Summer and deter potential burglars.

During the hot weather people understandably like to have their windows and doors open, however this can make a home more vulnerable to intruders.

Here’s some advice to keep in mind during warmer weather:

Ensure all windows and doors are locked when you leave the house – even if you’re only popping out for a few minutes!
Make sure to lock away ladders at all times
Keep front, patio and back doors closed and locked when you are elsewhere in the house or the garden
Trimming hedges and trees at the front of your property removes opportunities for burglars to hide out of sight
Consider growing prickly hedges or roses around the perimeter of your back garden – these are known as defensive plants and provide a level of deterrence
Installing a dusk to dawn security light (at head height by front and back doors) – this increases levels of surveillance and will deter offenders
Intruder alarm systems and CCTV will improve security – not to be replaced of basic security methods!
Make sure to keep garden sheds and other outbuildings locked at all times
Secure side gates and keep them well maintained with padlocks on
Keep valuables out of sight and away from windows and doors
Lock your bike away in a secure shed or garage
Clear or hide heavy, loose debris from garden areas such as bricks, slabs etc. as these can be used to access your home

Shropshire Council Health Protection Team is writing to all Animal Farm Visitor Attractions within the county to provide useful Public Health Advice and guidance to help manage the risks of zoonotic diseases.

As the Easter Holidays fast approach many families shall be visiting farm attractions, to experience the indoor and outdoor activities offered to the public, including viewing pets and farm animals. This provides a fantastic opportunity for the public to spend time in the county visiting local businesses and farms, as well as the rich educational benefits it brings to the young, to learn about farming and agriculture. It is our collective aim that all visitors have an enjoyable and safe experience, especially mitigating the risks of zoonotic diseases from livestock and small pets, such as; Cryptosporidiosis, Campylobacter Infection, Shiga Toxin producing E.coli (STEC) and Salmonellosis.

Parish events, such as Fetes, shows and other such activities and outdoor events are additional locations where the public may come into contact with pets and farm animals. Therefore, we take the opportunity to remind all event organisers of their legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, Management Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and Control of Hazardous Substances to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002, to have in place, suitable and sufficient risk assessments, and appropriate infection control procedures to protect the public from infectious diseases. The following guidance is provided, to assist you in achieving legal compliance and risk management controls.

The Industry Code of Practice Version 3 - https://visitmyfarm.org/resources/code-of-practice (This free downloadable Code of Practice document provides guidance, including pictures, of practical measures that you can apply at your premises to help you comply with the law and keep visitors safe. The examples are from businesses, ranging from conventional farms that open to the public for one day a year to attractions that may cater for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year)
